Frequently asked questions
What is WHOle Body Cryotherapy (WBC)?
WBC is a procedure that exposes the body to temperatures of -120 C (-184 F) down to -140 C (-220 F) for two to three minutes. While it's been used to treat conditions such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis in Japan since the late 1970s, it's only been used in Western countries for the past few decades, primarily to alleviate muscle soreness for elite athletes. This procedure is performed in a state-of-the-art machine called a CryoSauna.
CryoSauna is a machine that uses diffused nitrogen to evenly reduce the body's temperature over the course of two to three minutes. During this process, the body responds with vasoconstriction and pushes all the blood towards your vital organs. As a result, it makes the blood rich in oxygen and nutritionally dense. When you remove yourself from the cold, it has the opposite effect of warming the body back up causing vasodilation. Vasodilation is where the blood vessels expand wider than normal resupplying the body with much more oxygenated, nutritionally dense blood. One of the main reasons injuries take an extended period of time to heal is a lack of blood flow to the area, hence why Cryotherapy will greatly benefit anyone with an injury or joint pain.
What is the session like?
Our talented, professional team of Cryotherapy Technicians are present to support you in your individualized Cryo experience the entire time at Below Zero Cryo. As a means of preparing for your session, you will be asked to review and sign a medical consultation form and your vitals will be checked. Following a routine blood pressure check, you will be shown to a private room where you will be asked to disrobe (undergarments remain on). All body jewelry must be removed and no metals will be exposed on the body. Additionally, excess moisture (sweat, body oil, moisturizers) must be toweled off and no wounds left exposed. You will be supplied with everything needed for the Cryotherapy process including gloves, long socks and a robe (used before and after the Cryo session). The gloves and long socks protect your extremities and otherwise vulnerable areas in order to maximize the benefits and optimize your enjoyment.
Once ready, your Cryotherapy Technician will guide you through what to expect during your Cryo Experience. Following this briefing, you will be recommended a time frame and temperature range for your session (from 2 to 3 minutes of cold therapy). Once this is decided, your Cryotherapy Technician will have you enter the CryoSauna, close the door and ask you for your robe. At this point, your exhilarating, therapeutic experience will begin!
Afterwards, your Cryotherapy Technician will hand you your robe, allowing you to cover up before opening the CryoSauna door. From here, the Cryotherapy Technician will leave the room, allowing you to change back into your clothing and collect your belongings. At this point, your body will gradually return to its normal temperature. You will feel a euphoric energy, less aches/pains and have a bounce in your step!
IS the process Safe?
Yes. A Cryotherapy Technician will guide you through the entire process and ensure that you are not only safe but comfortable the entire time. If at any point any issues arise or you decide you want to discontinue the session, the Cryotherapy Technician will stop the process immediately.
In terms of the mechanisms used to perform Whole Body Cryotherapy, we use a state-of-the-art CryoSauna and nitrogen delivery system that gives precise control over the temperature to ensure a consistent, predictable experience. When Whole Body Cryotherapy is performed using proper procedures, prescribed temperatures and length of times that have been used for decades, it is a very safe and health benefitting process.
are there age restrictions?
Yes. Although, the CryoSauna produces completely natural effects, our machines are only designed for an adult-sized body. So to use our units, the client must be at least 14 years of age and of sufficient height to properly utilize the equipment. For anyone under 18, a parent or legal guardian must fill out and sign a legal consent form and waiver.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
Whole Body Cryotherapy is very well tolerated and has minimal risks; fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure by up to 10 points systolically (which will reverse after the end of the session, as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reactions to extreme cold (rare), and activation of some viral conditions (cold sores) due to stimulation of the immune system.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
The following conditions are contraindications to Whole Body Cryotherapy; pregnancy, severe hypertension (BP>180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud's Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infections, cold allergy (being allergic to cold), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases.
HOW Will i feel after cryotherapy?
During each session, the body releases endorphins which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The effects from each session last at least 6-8 hours. But like anything you do, the more sessions you can do, THE GREATER THE RESULTS. Regular sessions of Cryotherapy can extend benefits for greater lengths of time. In addition, the decrease in inflammation will cause you to feel decreased aches/pain and better flexibility. This is why athletes and people suffering from pain in general are able to find such quick relief and are able to bounce back faster. As an added benefit, you will BURN 500 CALORIES OR MORE PER SESSION due to the body's increase in metabolic rate. This makes Cryotherapy ideal for those trying to optimize their weight loss program.
can i workout immediately before or after my cryotherapy session?
Yes! It is completely safe either way. If you workout before your session, you can expect greater recovery due to the inflammation reduction. If you workout after your session, you can expect a higher pain tolerance, more energy and greater flexibility. Can't decide which option is better for you? DO BOTH! It is completely safe to do 2 sessions in a day with a minimum of 4 hours between sessions.
